Vivo made history last year as it became the first company ever to launch a smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera. Oppo soon took inspiration from such a working mechanism, and the company too had their own version of a smartphone possessing the pop-up selfie camera – with the Oppo Find X, as the phone sported an even better sliding design to the one that we saw with Vivo. Fair to say though that the pop-up selfie camera hasn’t really caught the eye of many other manufacturers, considering the fact that just a few other phone makers have actually gone on to replicate the design style.
Hence, instead of the pop-up selfie camera, we have seen other OEMs go for the more conventional notch setup than the innovative idea that the pop-up camera brings about it. However, this does not at all mean that we’ve seen all there was to with regards to the pop-up camera, as it might not be too long before Xiaomi too brings us a smartphone with a pop-up camera.

Wang Teng Thomas, who happens to be the product director down at Xiaomi has actually disclosed in his interactions with netizens that it might not be too long before the Chinese manufacturer too gets involved in making a phone coming with a pop-up camera. The response that followed from the exec was that the design is a trade-off, and pretty much everyone needs it, and hence, Xiaomi too will have it. He did however add that the design will actually depend on the need for the design. It should come to notice at this point that the Mi Mix 3 was released last year, and the phone become Xiaomi’s first ever smartphone to possess a slider design. It has also been stated that the Chinese manufacturer has applied for a patent for pop-up camera design as far back as 2015.

While it probably will happen, it’s also probable that Xiaomi won’t actually release such a phone anytime soon. This is because of the fact that the design liking to such a mechanism is still relatively new, and isn’t at all that popular. So until it gains a bit more popularity, don’t count on Xiaomi making its move.
