Xiaomi very own Donovan Sung has posted a photo today, which has got pretty much everyone talking. Though it isn’t clear as to what is meant by the photo, it showed an unreleased phone with 5G connectivity. The phone has quite the resemblance too, with a device which was previously teased by Xiaomi, a phone topped to be the Mi Mix 3.
Now Donovan Sung, the company’s spokesperson posted a tweet, which went on to reveal that the company tested 5G connectivity on its phone – an experiment which led to some success, too. Sung also went on to point towards an official rollout of the 5G connectivity on its phones, in 2019 that is.
Now I stated previously that with the picture posted of the phone had a great degree of resemblance to the Mi Mix 3, however, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Mi Mix 3 will be getting a 5G model. It is possible that the phone in the tweet posted was used for internal testing only.

According to recent reports, and other pointers taken from the photos in the tweets, it seems like the device teased by Xiaomi is running 3GPP 5G standard. Now if this turns out to be true, it would actually mark a shift from the early 5G plans undertaken by other companies. For instance, Verizon 5G network, which is supposedly set to launch this year, will be using its propriety 5GTF standard, before it finally transitions to 3GPP’s 5G-NR.
Another point which can be taken from the tweet is the fact that the phone looks quite identical to a unique slider based phone, which was also teased by Xiaomi just last week. Accordingly, the Chinese brand has stated the particular phone is set for an October launch.
The confusion is sky high at the moment because the rumors are here and there. It is unclear as to exactly when this Xiaomi phone will actually be available to the customers. There comes a contrary part, as what is the point of a 5G phone, it the networks don’t go on to support the standards set out? Hence, it won’t at all be surprising if the company announces a standard and 5H Mi Mix 3 this year, however, for the 5G capable model, wait until next year.
