Over the course of the past few years, the smartphone industry has been taken over by Chinese manufacturers who continue to develop unique smartphones with quite remarkable designs. In the most latest of unique designs coming from a Chinese manufacturer – Xiaomi has patented a smartphone design that features with a solar panel on the back.
This time last year, Xiaomi Mobile Software took upon itself to file a patent application with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) for a smartphone featuring with a solar cell module. The patent also included a few sketches of the design of the device – giving us a bit of an idea as to what we can expect if the device ever makes it to the market.
As far as the front of the device goes, the sketch does suggest that there is no notch, and so it isn’t exactly clear where the front-facing camera is placed. And as far as the subject goes, there also isn’t any indication that there is a pop-up module for the front camera. It might be possible that this phone may come with an In-display camera sensor – a technology already showcased by Xiaomi itself.

On the back of the device, we see a dual-camera setup with the camera sensors being placed in a vertical manner – also having an LED flash in between each other. And considering the fact that there is no fingerprint scanner on the back to accompany the camera sensors, it’s clear that there will be an In-display fingerprint sensor module.
The vertical camera setup is not the most interesting part of the back of the device though – with the solar panel placed being the most noticeable part of the back – covering the majority of the device’s back panel. And surprisingly enough, the solar panel is also thinner when taken into comparison with the camera module. With such a design, it will indeed be possible the charge the device via solar energy.
There have been other companies that have looked upon the idea to introduce a phone with a solar panel and now finally, we see a company working towards the concept – and not just exploring it. However, as of now, there seems to be information with regards to the launch of the phone. Even though the patent has been granted, this does not at all mean that there’s a guarantee the company will actually end up producing the phone and bring it in the market. Whether Xiaomi does go with it – we can only wait and see.
