The battery has been the most boring development over the past decade in smartphone technology. Where the screens got bigger, better, with chips getting faster and cameras getting ever so close to DSLR level professional photography standards. Among all these advancements, the battery has seen little to no developments apart from increase in size, but Xiaomi has finally decided to up the game and create new standards for battery charging.
Xiaomi has released a video showing off its new technology. It demonstrates Xiaomi’s 100W Super Charge Turbo technology, and it does so by comparing it to OPPO’s 50W SuperVOOC offering. It takes just 17 minutes to fully charge a 4,000mAh battery. In the same amount of time, the 3,700mAh battery on the OPPO smartphone only managed to load 65 percent.
No further details were shared at the moment about Xiaomi’s impressive charging technology. However, once ready, we expect it to debut on a future flagship device.
Branding aside, what matters is the actual charging speed, and Xiaomi’s ability to fully charge a phone battery in 17 minutes is impressive. The test stops when the Xiaomi phone fills up, leaving the Oppo battery stuck at a mere 65 percent. Considering that Xiaomi was charging a 4000mAh battery and that Oppo only had a 3700mAh battery, Xiaomi’s solution is about 1.6 times faster than Oppo’s quick charge, which is currently the fastest charging scheme on the market.
It is a great sight to see companies now going for that benchmark set so high and the beneficiaries could be the end consumers who are still waiting for some advancement to enable quicker charging times through better chargers. Currently, it’s the Chinese manufacturers who seem to be trying the hardest and we might see the big guns to follow soon.
