Google’s latest leap into innovation is likely to be embedded in a number of smartphones and devices in the future – once the technology makes its debut in the Pixel 4.
The Google Pixel 4 is set to be the very first smartphone – or any device for that matter from Google to feature with the latest Soli technology. The technology will allow people to do various stuff – like skipping songs, snoozing alarms, of even silencing phone calls with just a wave of the hand – all this according to a blog post and a video which teases the company’s upcoming launch of the flagship device this fall.
In all its essence, what Google has done is that the company has created a miniature radar system. Sitting right on the top of the phone, it will be configured to sense small motions around it. Google took upon the decision to integrate sensors with algorithms in order to make sure that it can detect motion and recognize gestures. The radar technology means that Soli will be able to work through fabric, while working in the dark too shouldn’t represent any problem for it. Back in January of this year, the technology was approved by the Federal Communications Commission – which paved the way for it to go on the market.

While some might surprised by the technology or indeed Google’s decision to implement it in the Pixel 4 – it has been a long time coming. Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects team has been working on Soli for quite a few years now – with the technology first being publicly debuting four years ago – all the way back in 2015. There is little doubting that Google has big plans when it comes to Soli – with the Pixel 4 just being part of a wider plan to embed the technology in a large number of products from the company – including the likes of the smart watches, smart speakers like the Google Home – and even AR headsets.
