It was not so long ago that Samsung introduced the world to its Galaxy Z Flip. The device made history in itself considering the fact that it happened to be the very first foldable smartphone that offered ultra-thin glass (UTG). Ultra-thin glass refers to higher and more improved durability in comparison to a foldable with that features with a plastic-only screen.
And now, with regards to the latest speculation surrounding Chinese companies Huawei and Xiaomi, both have purchased “ultra-thin flexible glass.” Moreover, the speculation has also made some conclusions that the two companies could in fact end up using it for products with foldable screens or indeed “surround screens.”
Huawei on its own has gone on to release two foldable phones up until this point in the Mate X as well as the Mate XS and so one can imagine the company using UTG on a future foldable phone.

Xiaomi’s apparent interest in the technology though doesn’t at all seem to be quite as straightforward. While the company hasn’t exactly released a foldable phone up until this point, it has actually demonstrated a rather interesting prototype.
Nonetheless, the company launched the Mi Mix Alpha concept phone just last year – the device that featured with a screen that goes on to wrap around the back of the device. Regardless of this though, due to the fact that UTG isn’t at all as durable as typical protective glass, we wouldn’t count on seeing the tech on a phone that doesn’t make way for the folding technology.
But in any case though, Samsung went with the way of adding a plastic layer right above the Galaxy Z Flip’s UTG layer – this apparently allowing and serving as a shatter protection in the case where the glass breaks. Of course the plastic layer still happens to be more susceptible to scratches anyways when compared with glass though. And while in theory it is indeed quite possible that both Huawei as well as Xiaomi too adopt this approach, hopefully there will be alternatives that the companies will have in mind.
