Uber’s application for a new license in London has been rejected by London’s transport authority, Transport for London (TfL) saying that the company is not a “fit and proper” private car hire operator.
TfL declared in a recent statement that it will not be renewing Uber’s license to operate in London. This decision sparked a protest from both customers and drivers who rely on Uber to get through their day.
Uber’s current license expected to be expiring on 30 September so its cars will not peter out instantly. As they have intended to challenge the ruling by TfL in the courts straight away.
With its 3.5 million users in the capital, the app can continue to operate until the firm has worn out the appeals process.
Sadiq Khan, London’s mayor, said he completely supported the verdict to have Uber’s license revoked stating that all companies need to “play by the rules”.
He said, “I want London to be at the forefront of innovation and new technology and to be a natural home for exciting new companies that help Londoners by providing a better and more affordable service. However, all companies in London must play by the rules and adhere to the high standards we expect – particularly when it comes to the safety of customers.”
Uber stated in a statement the decision would “show the world that, far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies”.
“3.5 million Londoners who use our app, and more than 40,000 licensed drivers who rely on Uber to make a living, will be astounded by this decision,” the company added. They also wrote to users on Friday asking them to “defend the livelihoods” of its drivers and they ask to sign a petition to the mayor to reverse TfL’s decision.
