India has been lately seen as dealing with a lot of strange issues in a strange manner. The laws that have been passed regarding those issues have also been very strange. Initially, it was the ban on PUBG, which was banned because ‘it promoted aggressive behavior among young people’, while fortnite and all other alternatives were working just fine in India. Thereafter, there was a surprise ban on TikTok for similar reasons. And again, the solution to the problem was considered to be banning the app nationwide. While PUBG users shifted to alternative apps for their daily usage, very few could find a capable alternatrive of TikTok and India being among the top users of TikTok it led to a huge wave of disappointment and frustration among the young Indians who were regular users of the app. On the bright side, it was just a play store ban, which meant that the people already using TikTok weren’t affected by it but rather those who wanted to download it from the app store. For those of you who don’t know about TikTok, it allows users to capture very short videos of movie and tv scenes playing in the background and the user dubbing his or her own video on top of it.

However, that seems to have changed now that the ban on TikTok has been reversed.
It’s not clear which of TikTok’s arguments swayed the court, but Bar and Bench reportsthat its lawyers argued the app has tech to keep nude videos from being uploaded, among other things. ByteDance, the team behind TikTok has issued a statement after the ban was reversed.
We are glad about this decision and we believe it is also greatly welcomed by our thriving community in India, who use TikTok as a platform to showcase their creativity. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our users better. While we’re pleased that our efforts to fight against misuse of the platform has been recognised, the work is never “done” on our end. We are committed to continuously enhancing our safety features as a testament to our ongoing commitment to our users in India.
