There has been a lot of talk surrounding HMD Global as a company, and most of this is down to the fact that the company just unveiled its latest flagship phone, and barring foldables like the Huawei Mate X and the Galaxy Fold, coming in as a more traditional smartphone, this was perhaps the most interesting device showcased at the MWC 2019. However, let’s take a blast into the past, shall we?
Just a little over two years have passed since HMD Global went on to resurrect the Nokia brand name, and ever since then, the brand has proceeded on to launch a bunch of devices – ranging across the entry-level and the mid-range segments. And while the majority of these devices are quite good, they weren’t as good as maybe some of the others. Take the example of the Nokia 8.1 – a great device, however, does it standout so much that you see throwback videos of the phone surfacing on the internet to this day? : no.
However, now, with the Nokia 9, the fortunes of HMD Global seem to be changing for the better good. The phone having five cameras and a bold approach to photography means that it is the first ever smartphone of its sorts. And while other smartphones too have a bunch of cameras at the back, taking into consideration the Samsung Galaxy A9, which has four cameras which can switch between ultra-wide, wide telephoto and depth sensing modes, this isn’t exactly what the Nokia 9 does with its cameras.

The Nokia 9 boasts to take shots which are extremely detailed. The phone has a laser focus, which gives it the ability to create the best possible depth maps present on a phone.
While certainly capable, there have been worries about the phone’s processing capabilities. The recent comments divide opinion, as the most recent comments have highlighted the part where the phone doesn’t actually have the latest processor, or takes too long to process the images. HMD has countered such claims recently by saying that the reason the phone does not have the latest processor is because of the effort it took the company to integrate five cameras to work with Snapdragon 845, with the company just not having enough time to play around with the Snapdragon 855.

But even if the people have concerns over the device, it wasn’t really ever meant to be a mass market device, was it? HMD itself has said that the company will be manufacturing quite limited numbers of the phone, as the phone’s main priority isn’t actually profit, but to invoke the spirit of the Nokia we all grew to love. And while the device might not be the company’s torch bearer as far as sales and profits are concerned, it still makes the brand interesting enough for people to keep an eye out, and for the curiosity levels to remain as they are so right now – and so the question pegs : what better marketing strategy than this?
