All over the world, as a result of the COVID-19, the smartphone market have seen major decline. Surrounding such a situation, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology has also recently gone on to release the data for mobile phone shipments for the month of May. In accordance to the data provided, it has been revealed that the Chinese smartphone market has seen a slump of 11.8 percent YoY last month.
Nonetheless, it is in fact quite easy to see the smartphone market in the country declining in May when it saw recovery a month prior to May in April – with 14.2% YoY increase in shipments.
Smartphone makers proceeded on to ship a total of 33.8 million smartphone units in May of 2020 in the country. On the other hand, from January to May, they managed to ship 124 million devices – representing an 18% YoY decline.

32 models were actually subject to being released just last month, and this number represents 22 percent less to the number last year in the same period. The launch of new models also saw an 18.8 percent YoY overall decline over the course of the last five months.
Smartphone shipments as a whole were down by 10.4 percent YoY in May as there were 32.66 million units to be seen on hand. In fact, it was even lower by 16 percent YoY from January to May with there being 121 million units.
With that said, it was 5G models that dominated the release procedures as they accounted for half of the new releases in May with 16 models. Companies went on to ship 15.64 million 5G devices last month – this accumulating to 46.3 percent of the total smartphone shipments in the month of May.
Over the course of the past five months, the Chinese market has bore witness to the launch of 81 5G devices as a whole as the shipping numbers reached that of 46.08 million units. This is in fact the only segment of the market where the country has seen progress.
