Not even a week has passed since we saw the very first impressions of the images that had been taken by Samsung’s 64MP mobile sensor. The results were obviously quite impressive, and if you think that this sensor was cut out to revolutionize the smartphone industry – consider a sensor with more than 50 percent more pixels.
Indeed Samsung’s 108MP smartphone camera sensor is soon to arrive in smartphones. The Samsung ISO CELL Bright HMX, which is a 108MP smartphone – was designed in collaboration with Xiaomi. Samsung has also recently said that it is the very first smartphone to surpass the 100 million pixel milestone for smartphones. Not only does the sensor have the capabilities to produce very impressive and high resolution photographs, but it will also be capable of shooting video in 6K (6016 x 3384) at 30 fps.

Practically speaking though, it is quite unlikely that users will require a photo with such a high resolution. And so the sensor has the ability to produce high quality 27MP images with the aid of combining groups of four pixels into one. While this does indeed refer to an image being of a lower resolution overall, it should mean that it’s far brighter – going a long way into helping in low-light performance. Also, the sensor is equipped with what Samsung has dubbed as being “SMART-ISO” technology. This means that it will automatically adjust the sensor’s ISO levels in order to compensate for brightly-lit or low light environments.
While we do know that the sensor will be arriving in the market sooner rather than later, neither Samsung nor Xiaomi has actually announced when or indeed in which phone they plan on to integrate the sensor within. Both these manufacturers would have to be careful though when taking into consideration the sheer size of the sensor. Coming with a 1/1.33-inch size, it is more or less three quarters of the size of the 1-inch sensor which can be found on the Sony RX100 VII compact camera. And so with such a commanding size in mind, one would have to imagine the phone not being an ideal fit for every smartphone out there.
One tipster has recently suggested that it could be the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 that features with the new sensor. It is expected that the sensor will enter mass production later in the month of August – and if so, then we could indeed see the first handset that uses it before 2019 comes to a halt.
