Recent reports have been suggesting that Samsung has plans to add Time Of Flight (TOF) sensor, on the back, as well as on the front of some of its smartphones, which come out next year. According to some other reports, the phone which are in line to get the sensors include the highest end of the s10 – a model which would come with 5G connectivity, as well as some other devices, too, probably coming from the Galaxy A series. The reports also say that the module could be of similar size to the existing modules of the cameras, so this might as well suggest that it could be from one of the six cameras that the 5G s10 might come with.
The sensors which have got everyone talking could actually have different uses, all for where they are placed at really. On the front side of things, the tech could be used to build better 3D maps of your face, and this could then go on to not only improve the security of face unlock, but it could also lead to making more realistic AR Emojis.
A rear sided TOF sensor could go on and provide a more accurate augmented reality experience that that of something like ARCore, which goes on to use only the phone’s regular camera, GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope, in an attempt to map an area in 3D. The sensor could also be used in VR, in order to create 3D environments, all based around the surroundings that you might find yourself with, at that particular moment.

How do the TOF sensors work?
The basic working principle of the TOF sensors is simple enough : the sensors beam out light, and then measure exactly how long it would take for the signal to return right back to the sensor. Hence, simply enough, by using this information, the sensors gain the ability to measure the depth, and become capable enough to create a 3D map of the particular environment.
The 3D TOF sensors are already existing in some Android phones, and these include the likes of the OPPO R17 Pro, which has one on the rear end, and let’s the users create 3D images by circling the camera around an object. Also, the latest phone from Huawei, the Mate 20 Pro too has a front facing TOF sensor, which is mainly used for the power of the face unlock feature that the phone possesses.
