Pakistanis will soon get rid of the outdated electricity meter and a reading system being replaced by electronic meters featuring a SIM card.
This is not a new or revolutionary technology, this electricity meter is already present in various countries of the world including Germany. However, we still depend upon people to record the meter readings.
The telecom companies have been asking the govt to roll out this automated meter reading system but out of some vested interests of the electricity mafia, we are not familiar with advanced technology.
For the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Lahore, Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has completed the bidding documents. However, documents are yet to be approved by the Asian Development Bank.
The company will install 1.8 million advanced meters, in this project, over the course of four years where Rs. 30 bn will be allocated by the Asian Development Bank.
This new metering system will be automating the billing system where the system will be sending the data of meter reading directly to the server to further generate an electronic electricity bill.
The system will save consumption of electricity by keeping the electricity thieves at bay. Also, LESCO will no longer require sending someone to disrupt someone’s electricity supply in case of non-payment of dues as they can cut off the electric supply of user from the grid station.
