Samsung fined $5.7 million: for adopting an Apple-like strategy

A watchdog group, which goes by the name of the Italian Authority for market and competition, has just handed Samsung a fine of 5 million euros, which builds up to 5.7 million dollars. This cause of the fine, as explained by the watchdog group itself is that Samsung intentionally slows down older phones, with the aid of the new updates.

The independent conclusion made by the group, leading to the eventual fining of the South Korean company is that : some of the updates “caused serious dysfunctions and reduced performance significantly, thereby accelerating the process of replacing them.”

The group has also placed further accusations on the smartphone giant, stating that the company has failed to inform its customers about the consequences that might occur with the updates in mind. With relation to this accusation, the group has also stated that not only has the company been misinforming its customers, but it doesn’t even provide a way to restore original functionality of the device(s).

Now this isn’t actually the first time a case like this has come to notice within the smartphone world, has it? After all, this all seems pretty familiar, probably down to the reason of Apple’s “Batterygate” scandal being exposed in late 2017, where the tech giant was accused of pretty much the same things as Samsung is being accused of now. As a matter of fact, the Italian Authority also made things worse for Apple, as it too was handed a fine, at the same time as Samsung in fact – with the only difference occurring that Apple was handed with a much harder fine – of around 10 million euros.

When the battery gate scandal was on its full course, Samsung actually vowed that the company would never do a thing like that – however, much to the disappointment of many, this hasn’t actually turned out to be the case – at least with the accordance of the Italian watchdog’s investigation.
