Chip maker Qualcomm has unveiled its first 7nm chips, but there is more to the say about the steps. Qualcomm contractors might be gearing up to build the Snapdragon 855 on a 7nm process.
Snapdragon X24 modem has been designed to cater to 5G networks offering peak downloading speeds of up to 2 Gbps, which is much faster than what one can get on even wired networks now.
Qualcomm is an ‘American multinational semiconductor’ & telecommunications equipment company that designs and markets wireless telecommunications products & services.
The new Qualcomm Snapdragon X24 modem builds on the X20 which has yet to make its appearance in the market.

The upcoming 845 chip by Qualcomm is being built on a 10nm Low Power Plus process, an incremental upgrade on the 10nm Low Power Early process followed in the 835.
While Samsung (which does fab the chips) claims 10 per cent higher performance or 15 per cent power reduction.
According to the early Snapdragon 855 rumors TSMC will build the 2019 chips. However, Qualcomm did not say who is building the X24 modem – likely to be the same fab that will make the 855.
In case it is TSMC (that is looking like the more probable version right now), it claims up to 40 per cent power reduction or 37 per cent or more increase in performance over their 10nm process, making it a pretty significant jump.
Qualcomm has announced a brand-new modem keeping in mind the surge for high-speed data access in the present age and the coming years. Qualcomm is setting the ground for 5G connectivity, with the announcement of its upcoming Snapdragon X24 modem allowing for faster data access speeds on mobile devices, among the other things.
The X20 is likely to make an appearance in the upcoming Snapdragon 845 SoC, while the X24 should arrive in devices by the end of this year.
What comes with the 7nm process? A better battery efficiency among other things but we are not sure how much of splash it would make when it arrives.
This all is because Qualcomm had also unveiled a Snapdragon X50 NR (New Radio) modem (one that allows multi-mode connectivity) in 2016. It was a just a few days ago that flagship giants like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, ZTE & Nokia said they would utilise the same in premium smartphones that are to arrive in 2019.
