As directed by the Lahore High Court, the PTA has been ordered to stop any unwarranted promotional calls and text messages. Such a decision by the High Court comes as a result of a petition which was filed by a citizen.
Justice Shahid Jamil was the one responsible for calling upon Muhammad Shafique– who happens to be the communication director of PTA. When the question arose as to why PTA is not taking any action against such spam messages, Shafique commented by saying that there is no mechanism which is present – to stop these unwarranted messages.
Shahid Jamil though stated that if such messages cannot be stopped, action should be taken against the numbers which happen to spread them. He further stated that since PTA is a regulatory body, it should be able to take actions against acts of spam.

Not only the traditional text messages, but WhatsApp, Messenger along with other social apps are being used in an attempt to spread promotional messages from local brands within Pakistan. These mobile phone numbers are present on Facebook groups, as well as OLX and platforms like OLX. On the other hand, there are also some text marketing firms which happen to charge only 100 to 200 rupees for promotional messages to databases which go on to span more than 10,000 numbers easily.
