Despite the motorway being a rather comfy ride for travellers between cities, it is the toll plazas that have a large number of cars occupied in purchasing tickets causing excessive jams and the comfortable ride becoming a more annoying one. The National Highway Authority (NHA) has planned to do something about it.
In effect from May 2, 2019, the authority will require each car to have an M-Tag for the road, no exceptions. The ticketing system is to be abolished to make way for this faster process of validating cars and charging them. This would greatly reduce traffic jams at entry and exit points to the motorways.

M-Tag is an RFID chip which allows for the scanners at these terminals to scan the car and automatically reduce the required amount from the prepaid amount submitted by the M-Tag car owners. The chip rests on the car’s windscreen and as the car approaches the terminal the scanner automatically scans the chip saving the time and preventing any jams.
According to the Notification released from NHA:
‘It is hereby notified for the information of all concerned that in order to avoid traffic congestion, public inconvenience and to ensure free flow of vehicles at entry and exit points to the motorways, it has been decided to make M-Tag registration compulsory for vehicles travelling on Motorways M-1 and M-2 w.e.f (2nd May, 2019).
No vehicle shall be allowed to ply on M-1 & M-2 beyond 2nd May 2019 without M-Tag registration. All users of Motorways M-1 & M-2 are requested to get their vehicle registered with the M-Tag facility before 2nd may 2019.’
