So Facebook has been a part of so much controversy in recent times after users of the app have shown dissatisfaction with the relative policies of the platform in terms of user data privacy. Facebook have made their situation worse by continuously giving users something after which they truly feel insecure on trusting the website with their data. So Mark Zuckerberg came out the Wall Street Journal and according to them he states that the reason why users don’t trust Facebook is because they don’t understand. Yeah, or maybe its just because you have been proven guilty on multiple times for failing to secure the users data, be it the people mistrusting the app for providing the users habitual data to provide for the advertising agencies or be it the leaked data to many application developers out in the world. Well for a start the owner of the company gave users some insight on the whole concept of ads on Facebook and well he did make some sense by stating the basics, he said“I believe everyone should have a voice and be able to connect. If we’re committed to serving everyone, then we need a service that is affordable for everyone. The best way to do that is to offer services for free, which ads enable us to do.”Furthermore he assured the Facebook’s investors and the public that his company does not indulge in selling user data. He supported this statement by stating that the platform simply collects enough data on users to classify and categories their preferences. He also added that “In fact, selling people’s information to advertisers would be counter to our business interests, because it would reduce the unique value of our service to advertisers. We have a strong incentive to protect people’s information from being accessed by anyone else”.
So Mark Zuckerberg says that people don’t trust Facebook because they don’t understand how the platform works!
Mark Zuckerberg also reminded the many people that users have full control over what information they are shown in the ads and hence can block any unwanted ads that perceive as useless, annoying or offensive. He adds that “You can find out why you are seeing an ad and can change your preferences to get adds you’re interested in”. He then went on to address one of the biggest controversies the company have surrounded themselves in, The Cambridge AnalyticaScandal. He did not go in to the exact details of the whole situation but offered full support for the regulations that promote transparency. “We need to be clear about the ways we’re using information, and people need to have clear choices about how their information is used,” he added.
