Jury against Apple

Just a couple of days ago, at a trial held in San Diego between Qualcomm and Apple, a jury had decided that Qualcomm deserved to win when there was a declaration after considerations of all the facts that Apple had indeed violated three Qualcomm patents. With this said, since Apple was found guilty, the jury had agreed that Apple should pay $31 million in damages.

The suit was filed all the way back in July of 2017, however, isn’t the only worldwide legal battle that Qualcomm is pursuing against Apple. While this wasn’t the biggest of all the suits that Qualcomm is  involved in with Apple, it certainly represents progress for Qualcomm, as the company has not only won 31 million dollars, but also goes into one of the largest trials with Apple to time with its confidence levels on the high, with this trial set to take place next month.

There were three patents in question with the trial in mind, and all three of the patents are related to Apple’s most popular product – the iPhone. The patents are as follows :

  1.  Technology that allows a smartphone to quickly connect to the internet once the device is turned on.
  2. Technology related to graphics processing and its effect on battery life.
  3.  Technology that shifts traffic between the processor and modem, allowing for faster downloads.

Following the accusation by Qualcomm, the jury agreed that Apple had used the three patents mentioned above, however, did not manage to get permission from Qualcomm to do so. Apple had made its case by stating that one of its employees had Co-developed the first patent on the list, and hence, should be the Co-owner of the technology. To this, the jury did not agree.

$31 million is pocket change for a company of Apple’s size, which at one point, was worth 1 trillion dollars. However, like I stated above – this win isn’t all about the money for Qualcomm, as the company’s chances at next month’s trial will certainly be boosted, with the trial potentially worth billion of dollars and hence being much more important.
