New strings of code coming in from XDA-Developers that happened to have been spotted just today go on to suggest that Xiaomi is in the works for a phone coming with a primary camera of 64MP.
Found in the latest MIUI 10 China Developer ROM for the Redmi K20 Pro, the strings go on refer to a 64MP “ultra-pixel” mode more than just once – several times in fact. The strings also happened to have referred to a “64MP DUAL CAMERA” watermark for images.
Such news does not at all contradict what famous leaker Ice Universe published on Weibo. According to Ice Universe himself, the subsidiary of Xiaomi – Redmi is working on a smartphone that will feature with a 64MP camera. If so and this does turn out to be the case, then the device will indeed be the first ever device in China to feature with a camera of such sorts.

While things do seem exciting for Xiaomi, it may face competition from Samsung and the Korean manufacturer’s unannounced Samsung Galaxy A70s. The rumors surrounding the Galaxy A70s suggest that the device will come as a slightly upgraded version of the regular Galaxy A70s and that it just as might end up being the first ever smartphone to possess a 64MP camera.
The ISOCELL Bright GW1 is the only 64MP sensor that has been announced so far, and this sensor was actually announced by Samsung. The sensor uses the company’s take on pixel-binning in an attempt to merge data from four pixels into one. When such a process is carried out, the results yield 16MP images with a 1.6-micron pixel size.
The ISOCELL Bright GW1 also has the capabilities to support super phase detection auto-focus technology, Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) to make the case for improved use of light from the environment, and real-time high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 100 decibels (dB) to make the case of better contrast.
Right now we don’t know whether Samsung or Xiaomi will come on top when releasing a phone coming with a 64MP camera and so we’ll have to wait to see what exactly happens. But at the end of the day this might not even matter since an executive from Qualcomm recently claimed that smartphones having 100MP sensors will be arriving by the end of this year.
