While many flagships are water and dust resistant, none of them are actually waterproof. While OnePlus has been known to offer some unofficial resistance in its flagship devices, the company has never done so via a certification – with an official rating. While for most regions, the OnePlus 8 will in fact still remain without official resistance, it will be on offer in some others. With that said, the OnePlus 8 Pro goes on to finally offer IP68 certified water and dust resistance in all markets.
So all in all though, what does IP68 mean? Well, IP stands for Ingress Protection and is then followed by two numbers. The first number actually indicates the level of protection offered against solid particles – this ranging from one to six. The second number tells you how much water a device can hold of without suffering any damage – this ranges from one to eight : of course, higher the protection, better the protection.

Can you take your phone for a swim if it’s IP68?
While the phone may hold off some occasional dips, it is never a good idea to throw the phone into the pool, because other factors also play a part here. For one, the water might actually contain chlorine, salt or indeed other chemicals or minerals that may negatively impact the longevity of your device.
And so, while it would be normal and alright to have the device near water, it wouldn’t always be a good idea to submerge it. And if you are in fact in need to submerge the water and want to do it on regular basis, then perhaps you should consider buying a special waterproofing cases – which by the way are now very popular and in demand.
