In-display fingerprint sensors havebeen associated with OLED displays ever since they gained popularity in the smartphone market not so long ago. However, this is set to change quite sooner than we expected, as display maker BOR has announced the technology which goes on to use In-display fingerprint sensors with LCD panels.
A report coming in from DigiTimes states that the company has picked up the project to commence the mass production of LCD panels being embedded with In-display fingerprint sensors – with the commencement set for the end of this year. However, as of now, there is no mention at all as to what companies will actually be interested in buying the displays.
Before I mentioned that In-display fingerprint sensors have only been found only in OLED panels. The reason behind this is the fact that OLED displays are thinner when compared to LCD ones, and this thinner nature allows light and ultrasonic transmitters to better get to your finger.

It will also be quite interesting to see exactly how the LCD displays with In-display fingerprint sensors end up performing. With that said, there is little doubting the fact that if the technology ends up gaining popularity, it could quite easily make its mark throughout the smartphone industry. DigiTimes has stated that smartphones that feature with LCD displays go on to account for 85 percent of the ones that have been shipped in the last year or so alone.
And importantly enough, such technology will also open doors for budget phones to feature with the sensors. As of now, the In-display fingerprint sensors are only found in flagship smartphones, which cost no less than around $500. Realistically enough, a year from now we can possibly see the Moto G8 along with some of the budget offerings from Xiaomi, Huawei as well as Honor to offer In-display fingerprint sensors in quite attractive prices.
