After the US ban took place which meant that Huawei could no longer deal with companies that found themselves based in the US, ARM was another one of these entities looking on to find out whether or not it could affiliate itself with the Chinese manufacturer. After months and months of speculation though, it has now been confirmed by the company itself that Huawei chip-making subsidiary, Hisilicon is finally clear to use its ARM v8-A as well as V9 architectures as they stem from the UK and find of the country’s origins.
A spokeswoman of the company stated : “ARM’s v8 and V9 are UK-origin technologies.” She continued by saying : “ARM can provide support to HiSilicon for the ARM v8-A architecture, as well as the next generation of that architecture, following a comprehensive review of both architectures, which have been determined to be of UK origin.”

Just a few months ago, ARM claimed that some of its technologies were actually of ‘US-origin’. So while in fact it is actually a British multinational company, this claim had created some complexities. Huawei of course was not happy to hear the news, as the Chinese manufacturer has shown a continued reliance on ARM’s CPU and GPU designs in recent times – all for its Kirin SoC lineup which goes on to power its smartphones. Careful analysis as well as careful consideration in recent months though has led ARM to the conclusion that it can indeed continue to affiliate with Huawei.
This news comes just after the one where it had been revealed that the second temporary extension from the ban granted by comes to an end. The reprieve was only until November until after it was agreed that the US companies will stop the process of supplying technology to Huawei – even for the maintaining existing products.
