Ranitidine is drug used to produce different drugs in all over the world. The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) on Monday directed tens of companies across the country to stop manufacturing medicines made with the raw material ‘Ranitidine’ — including Zantac which is manufactured by GSK in Pakistan.
Zantac is used for stomach acidity and related discomforts. According to report of foods are drugs regulation authority this medicine contains such elements which can cause cancer to human body. The Drap document, says that a nitrosamine impurity called N-Nitrosodimethyla-mine (NDMA) [a probable carcinogenic impurity] has been found in some products containing Ranitidine. The FDA said people don’t need to stop taking the medication, but patients taking the prescription versions who wish to discontinue may want to talk to their doctor about other treatment options, and people taking an over-the-counter version can consider other medicines approved for their conditions.
NDMA is a known environmental contaminant and found in water and foods, including meats, dairy products, and vegetables. NDMA can cause harm in large amounts, but the levels the FDA found in preliminary tests of ranitidine “barely exceed amounts you might expect to find in common foods. Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap ) is closely working with different investigation agencies to find the possible side effects of this drug. This drug is sold in all over world and different regulation authorities have issued notice and warning to stop sale of this drug. Government of Pakistan has also notice regarding this issue to stay cautious and not to consume this drug.
