Within the span of a mere 5 months Facebook has been apart of a conspiracy all year round, from spammers to the banning of over 1.5 million accounts Facebook has been a part of people’s discussion for some time now, with people starting tojudge the piracy the company provides for them. Facebook, moreover announced that they recently also uncovered a massive breach in their systems which allowed applications to view photos of users which should not be discovered in public platforms. The breach occurred on the 13th of September this year,and was discovered by Facebook on the 25th of September. Further more these applications that breached in to the security of Facebook gained accessto the millions of peoples photos for up to 10 days.
Moreover the Photo API is supposed to allow access to user’s photos which are visible onthe timeline to an application which the user gives permission to. However as aresult of this breach, these mentioned apps had access to a much broader set ofphotos, about 6.8 millions users are thought to be affected by this breach,these millions of users had approved the access to these apps and moreover ithas been revealed that up to 1500 applications built by 876 differentdevelopers were affected by this bug in the Facebook system.

It is also interesting to see that the photos that may or may not have been posted to Facebook are also stored on these servers for up to 3 days, these include photos that toy may have uploaded but may not have posted them. These photos were also breached and were shared to the developers of the applications. Facebook on this matter came out an stated that: “We are sorry that this happened, by early next week we will be rolling out tools for app developers that will allow them to determine which people who using their apps might be impacted by this bug, We will also be working with those developers to delete the photos of the impacted users”

Finally the users affected by this breach have been notified and will be redirected towards a support article which will help them further secure their accounts so that no such activity can affect them ever again. As for now Facebook recommends users to check for their apps which have access to their photos which is a clear indication as to how you should revoke access to them to prevent any future inconveniences!
