The Ministry of Climate Change has been suggesting an amendment that would mean that electric cars are imported duty free into Pakistan to encourage people to buy these cars and in order to build an environment which is more sustainable and is not plagued by petrol vehicles.
Electric cars have all sorts of advantages. They do not make sounds no do they have any air coming out of the exhaust, that covers two parts of the pollution factor. Additionally, the use of fossil fuels is reduced as electricity is used for these cars, the primary source of which is water. Making these cars duty free would mean that they are commercially viable is more people can afford it. But there is more to the story than just an amendment of the law.

Electric cars require a massive infrastructure in order to succeed in the modern world. Many areas in US have been successfully able to build this infrastructure which involves charging stations at particular spots to make for easy recharging of the car. Long routes in car specially become even more concerning when one knows that there aren’t any charging stations available. Not only this, but this would mean that the local industry, which is suffering from heavy taxation right now would face further problems because of increased competition. That’s exactly what has happened as local automakers have criticized the decision as this would mean killing the local industry.
This should be understood that before the influx of electric vehicles into Pakistan, substantial funds should be allocated and then used onto the building of infrastructure for such cars like charging stations in numerous areas and on motorways so that once they are here they can succeed in the Pakistani market. If done with proper planning this could be a possible automobile revolution in Pakistan.
