Counterpoint research concludes that affordable premium smartphones are here for the good

With their being some significant launches of some particular phones such as the iPhone X – the manner with which we view the smartphone world has changed completely as smartphones continue to surprise not only by the level of innovation, but also with the price tags that are demanded. And so, with the implementation of $1000+ phones, we are  seeing more and more of consumers focusing on the ‘affordable premium’ devices– those of whom bring about the prices that flagships were sold not so long ago. This new trend is explained even better as Counterpoint research took into account the South Korean market.

For many years now, we’ve seen Samsung’s Galaxy S series make the headlines as these two in continuity have been the top-selling smartphones models based in South Korea. However, this trend has turned over its head as can be seen in the Q1 2020 Counterpoint Research smartphone sales tracker for South Korea.

The top-selling smartphone from the Korean manufacturer in this period was actually the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G – a phone being in excess of $400. However, even though the most popular smartphone was a mid-range premium one, that did not mean that more flagships didn’t make the list – as the second-most selling Samsung phone was actually the Galaxy Note 10 5G while the fifth position was occupied by the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G.

The trend which means that both the Galaxy S Series as well as the Galaxy Note series have been making way for the entry-level as well as mid-range devices has been there since 2018. Of course as you might have already imagined, the increasing prices that are now demanded coupled with the sheer number of options available in the market – this was only likely to happen.

And as more and more consumers turn towards the premium mid-range devices, more and more companies too seem to be entertaining the idea. Indeed this was exemplified by Apple itself as the company recently created much hype over its mid-range iPhone in the iPhone SE 2020.
