Huawei has made a habit of spending large and large sums of money in research and development – which forms part of the reason why the company has enjoyed so much success globally in recent times. And now in that same form, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released data for April of last year in which it showed that the Chinese manufacturer actually went on to file a total of 4,411 patents in 2019. As a result of this large number, the company ranked as the top corporate filer on a global basis. Chinese company Huawei went on to file the most 5G patents on a global basis as of February 2020.
The company’s patent portfolio was only then likely to make its way into 5G – and this has exactly been the case. IPlytics – a German patent data company has recently announced that Huawei actually filed a total of 3,147 5G standard-essential patents (SEPs) – and of these, 2000 have been granted. And so as a direct consequence of this, Huawei actually ranked first as far as the sheer number of SEPs filed amongst 5G companies worldwide goes! It was then said that Huawei accounted for 15.05 percent of the total 5G patents filed worldwide – which makes it a leader in the 5G communication field.

Of course other companies too follow Huawei in the quest of 5G glory, and these include the likes of Samsung, to the likes of LG, ZTE, Ericsson, Intel and more.
With all this said though, there is one rather interesting fact to be taken into consideration : most of Huawei’s patents have not even been approved. Indeed Nokia and Samsung are both two companies that have the largest share of patents already granted. Of course this also represents the idea that both these companies haven’t exactly been filing many patents in recent times due to the fact that the approval for a patent takes a rather long time.
