CEO Alibaba and Telenor Officials Discuss Pathway to Digital Pakistan

CEO Alibaba and Telenor Officials Discuss Pathway to Digital Pakistan. In order to foster the development in IT and ecommerce sector Sigve Brekke, CEO Telenor Group and Irfan Wahab, CEO Telenor Pakistan visited the headquarters of Alibaba Group in Hangzhou China on their visit to Mobile World Congress in Shanghai.

The delegate met Jack Ma, CEO Alibaba Group, and had a progressive discussion on increased collaboration in IoT, Cloud computing and Big Data and how investing in these future technologies can spur digital revolution in Pakistan.

The Chinese e-commerce giant has many times shown concern in investing into the digital technologies in Pakistan. The company has recently acquired Daraz, one of the largest e-commerce platforms of Pakistan and seemingly is looking for more opportunities.

Alibaba made its entry in Pakistan last year and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) in June 2017 where Ant Financial and TDAP agreed to foster the growth of worldwide exports of products by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Pakistan through e-commerce.

The Chinese e-commerce company also showed interest in establishing the e-commerce and digital payment system in Pakistan. Ant Financial, Alibaba’s subsidiary also purchased 45% stake in Telenor Bank in the country for $184.5 million.

Recently, CEO of Telenor Pakistan, Irfan Wahab Khan has also been elected as the President of the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce & Industry (OICCI) with effect from July 1, 2018.
