Although Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) last year launched a wide-ranging program to deject smuggling, and theft of mobile devices, by blocking these illegal and forged handsets being used in the country.
In this regard, a system was introduced with name of ‘Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System’ (DIRBS) and it used the distinct IMEI number of each device, along with other parameters, to help out in identifying, supervising, monitoring and regulating such devices.
One of the major reasons behind smuggling in Pakistan is high customary taxes imposed or actually in simple words you can say forced by the government. It was government’s tax policy which provides a chance to grow grey market and as a result of this irony the numbers of grey importers are increasing day by day and they working freely to make money illegally in the country.
However, over the past few months we have seen the decline in the legal import of mobile phones in contrast to the same time in the earlier fiscal year which is certainly a danger sign for the national fund as well.
In order to overcome the effect of current situation, Government should take more strict actions against smuggling in the country.
