AI Recruitment Tools: Possibly Overlooking Premier Job Candidates
In the late 2023 IBM survey encompassing over 8,500 global IT professionals, findings revealed a significant uptick in the use of AI screening by businesses. Approximately 42% of companies were leveraging AI to refine recruiting and human resources processes, with another 40% contemplating its integration.
Initially hailed as a tool to mitigate biases in hiring practices, AI recruiting technologies have instead stirred concerns. Some experts argue that these tools are inadvertently sidelining highly qualified job candidates, potentially exacerbating disparities in employment opportunities.
Hilke Schellmann, an assistant professor at New York University and author of “The Algorithm: How AI Can Hijack Your Career and Steal Your Future,” voices skepticism regarding the purported neutrality of AI screening. She emphasizes the risk lies not in machines replacing workers but in their role as gatekeepers, potentially excluding deserving candidates from consideration.
Instances of qualified applicants being adversely affected by AI screening are emerging. Anthea Mairoudhiou’s experience in the UK, evaluated unfavorably due to AI’s assessment of her body language, underscores these concerns. Moreover, Schellmann highlights systemic flaws in AI algorithms, citing instances of biased criteria favoring certain demographics and penalizing others.
Marginalized groups, Schellmann contends, are particularly vulnerable to being overlooked by AI systems due to differing backgrounds and interests. She draws attention to opaque selection criteria and instances where AI evaluations diverge significantly from human judgment.

The opaqueness surrounding the impact of AI in hiring processes poses challenges. Schellmann warns of the potential for widespread harm as companies increasingly rely on AI for screening, with little accountability for flawed systems. She suggests that vendors may prioritize profit over ethical considerations, rushing to market imperfect products.
In response to these concerns, Sandra Wachter, a professor at the University of Oxford, advocates for the development of tools to detect and rectify biases in AI algorithms. Wachter’s Conditional Demographic Disparity tool, adopted by companies like Amazon and IBM, aims to promote fairness and accuracy in decision-making processes.
Schellmann calls for industry-wide regulations to address the shortcomings of AI in recruiting. Without intervention, she fears AI technologies could exacerbate inequality in the workplace. Establishing safeguards and oversight mechanisms, she argues, is essential to ensure that AI serves its intended purpose without perpetuating systemic biases.
