The Samsung Galaxy S20 series gives evidence of the very first time thereby which Samsung decided on to adopt a higher refresh rate within its phones – topping out at 120Hz. Unfortunately enough though, this refresh rate only has the compatibilities to be used at FHD+ resolutions, even though the Galaxy S20 does offer QHD+ screens. And so all in all, users are given the choice of either going with a higher resolution or a higher refresh rate.
However, things might soon change as the latest reports that surround Samsung suggest that the company is currently in the process of testing the ability to use the 120Hz refresh rate at QHD+ resolution. Moreover, there is also the indication that the firmware update which would be released in order to enable this feature may end up being released in up to three months’ time.
It is said that Samsung initially went down the route of offering 120Hz at QHD+ resolution due to the fact that there were concerns over the battery life. And these are viable concerns considering the fact that the higher refresh rate does in fact require more juice – with the case being similar with respect to QHD+ resolution over FHD+.
Nonetheless though, it would be great to see Samsung at least present the option for such compatibility. Users will of course have it in their own to decide whether or not they want to enable the two features together – or indeed save battery life.
This reported tweak from Samsung is said to have come after Oppo readies its latest and upcoming device in the Find X2. This yet to be launched phone from Oppo too is expected to arrive with a 120Hz refresh rate as well as the ability to offer a QHD+ screen. How Oppo’s device manages on the battery front – we can only wait and see.
